Campanille
The beautiful building that the restaurant Campanile now occupies was originally designed by Charlie Chaplin as his office; in typical Hollywood fashion, he lost it in a divorce settlement to his wife. Its current incarnation is Mediterranean in detail, and features a bell tower, “campanile” in Italian. Chef (and owner) Mark Peel’s cuisine is rustic French and Italian, with a moderating Californian influence. He’s particularly famous for his grills and roasts: The grilled prime rib with olive tapenade is a particular standout. Note: Monday nights offer a special three-course menu for $35 a person, and Thursday is grilled cheese sandwich night featuring fantastic croque monsieurs and madames.
